![]() I was in Auckland, getting my hair dyed and freaking out, by the way. Initially, they wanted to dye Lawless's hair blonde, but she wasn't excited about the potential prospect of her hair falling out due to the stress the bleaching process would have on her hair. When she was cast, she went to hair and makeup, and a discussion was had about how the character should look. When she played Lyla (in the Season 1 episode “As Darkness Falls”), her hair was light brown and almost red in color. This presented a slight problem because the actress was already established in the series, but there was a way around the problem. Initially, Xena was meant to return to her own body at the end of the episode, but instead, she ends the episode stuck in Callisto's body, pushing the story to an additional episode.īefore she landed the role of Xena on Hercules, Lucy Lawless played a different character. The ending of the episode “ Intimate Stranger” had to be changed to accommodate her injury. Otherwise, I would maybe not be walking.īecause she was seriously hurt, Lawless's taping of Xena became problematic. We were filming the skit and, going across concrete, and it was a western horse, and I ride English, and it's just not a marriage made in heaven, and as I pulled the horse to a stop, its feet skittered out from under it on the concrete, and I was thrown clear. ![]() In a 2001 interview, Lawless detailed what happened: She was hospitalized with pelvic fractures, necessitating a comment from Leno explaining why his booked talent for the evening wasn't making an appearance. The horse she was riding in a parking lot lost its footing, and Lawless fell. Lucy Lawless was seriously injured in October 1996 while shooting a comedy sketch for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, so it's somewhat ironic she was injured outside of Xena. But sometimes, injuries can happen when you least expect them to. Any time an actor does a stunt, they open themselves up to injury.
